DON STEPHENS AND MARJORIE

Don has been a member of the Rotary Club of Dubbo West since 1991, serving as Club President in 2000- 2001. He has served in most positions on the Club Board and had 100% attendance record since joining. Dubbo West awarded Don a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2002 for services to the club, District 9670 and the community. After serving as District Conference Chairman in 1996 Don’s interest in Rotary beyond club level was raised and he and Marjorie have been regular attendees at Conferences since. He joined the District Youth Exchange Committee in 1998 until 2008. He has served on the District Training Committee since 2002 as President's Elect Training Seminar (PETS) Co-ordinator and Trainer. He was Assistant Governor from 2002-2004.

Born in Kandos NSW and raised in nearby Glen Davis until end of primary school Don then moved to Mudgee to attend high school where he completed the Leaving Certificate in 1959. After completing a two year primary teacher training course at Bathurst Teachers College, Don was appointed to the small central west town of Tottenham. It is here that he met Marjorie Simpson, a young trainee nurse who was later to become his wife. Following three years in Tottenham and two years in a one teacher school near Wellington, Don was appointed to Blayney for 13 years. While at Blayney external studies at Macquarie University saw Don graduate in 1977 with a degree majoring in Geology and Mathematics and also saw a move into high school teaching. A transfer to Delroy High School in Dubbo followed. In 1989 Don saw the opportunity to go into a life insurance and financial planning business and the opportunity for a new challenge. He remains a partner in Goldenwest Financial Solutions in Dubbo.

Don has always had a strong interest in sport, playing rugby league and rugby union. He has coached at senior level and also many schoolboy and junior representative sides. Baseball, indoor cricket and currently golf have continued the sporting interests. Don was also a member of the Rural Fire Service for 16 years, 10 as President of the local brigade.

In 1965 Don married Marjorie. They have three sons: Wayne, Aust-NZ I.T. manager for IBM based in Sydney; Craig, General Manager of a large building company on the Gold Coast; Grant, Computer Systems Analyst based in Vancouver, Canada. They have seven grandchildren. In 2007 the Rotary Club of Dubbo West awarded Marjorie a Paul Harris Fellowship for her years of dedication to early childhood education and for raising funds for West Dubbo Children’s Centre as well as for service to Rotary in food supply and catering. Don and Marjorie have also hosted several exchange students and contributed to the District Youth Exchange Committee.
