Steve was born and educated on the central and north-western slopes in NSW. On leaving school he joined the Justice Department and worked in Court Houses in NSW for many years. He obtained a private pilot’s license in 1965, legal qualifications in 1969 and a post-graduate law diploma in 1971.  He joined a legal practice in Cessnock in 1980 and worked in criminal and family law. In 1994 he became a Local Court Magistrate continuing until his retirement in 2010. He still works as a Magistrate on occasions.
Over the years Steve has been a member of the Rotary Clubs of Cessnock, Port Macquarie West, Newcastle Sunrise and Maitland Sunrise but is now back at Cessnock club. He has been president of 2 clubs and has held many director’s portfolios. He is a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a committee member and deputy chair of the district Youth Exchange Committee.  He has been an Assistant Governor, and has been District Legal Officer, Public Officer and Chair of the Resolution Session at District Conference. He has been involved with awarding scholarships through the Rotary Foundation. He supports youth programs and has acted as the Secretary General of MUNA. 
Outside Rotary Steve has been a member of the Rural Fire Service for almost 40 years. He holds qualifications up to and including Group Leader, has been a trainer and has acted as Fire Control Officer. He has often acted as the driver/pump operator when his brigade has been called out.
