After the success of the lantern walk last year to Light Up Rotary, the lantern walk is back and will be held on Saturday 13 February 2016 from 4pm with proceeds going to the Mission to Seafarers and the Newcastle Maritime Centre.

The Rotary Club of Newcastle, with assistance from the various other Rotary Clubs around Newcastle, would like to invite you to participate in this event to celebrate Chinese New Year with the lantern walk using red lanterns.

As this years Rotary theme is "Be A Gift To The World", the Rotary Clubs will provide a gift to the seafarers visiting the Port of Newcastle and the maritime heritage of our city through the donation.

The Mission assists sailors visiting the Port of Newcastle with a 'home away from home' at the Seafarers Centre in Wickham. There are currently over 40,000 people who visit the Port and over 13,000 use the services offered each year, with transport to the Centre, shopping, banking, healthcare and social and spiritual support. Funds from this years walk, will allow them to upgrade the kitchen.

The money going to the Newcastle Maritime Centre will enable them to build a new entrance to its new public cafe on the harbour foreshore.

Lanterns will be on sale from 4-8pm at various harbourside locations, and then walk from Nobby's to the Harbourside precint.

Dragon boat races will be held near the Maritime Centre between 2-5pm.

At 4pm, the Fort Scratchley guns will fire.

An official ceremony will be conducted at 7pm, and there will also entertainment acts being conducted at the Honeysuckle Precinct including Chinese lion dancers, dragons, dancers, musicians, singers, marching bands, and choirs.

Between 7-8pm, the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club will bring out their boats and yachts to sail past and carry lanterns to form a channel of boats to "Light Up Newcastle" from the harbour. The local tugs and ferry will also carry lanterns and the tugs will perform a water ballet around 6pm.

The guns from the Fort Scratchley Museum will again be fired around 9pm to mark the end of the event and there will be fireworks.

Below is the route of the walk, as well as a timetable of events.
